Ups and Downs (Part 2)

First of all, we just hit 500 views!  That's more friends than I have on Facebook.  Today's shout out goes to my newest Facebook friend, Evan Papai.  He made it out to We Ho for the show last night and that makes him awesome!

As TJ said in her last post, last night was the "big" show.  She will tell you it sucked.  I want to clarify... there were some elements of the show that left something to be desired, but TJ was NOT one of them!  She rocked the unusually lame crowd and I had to try so hard to not laugh over the footage we got.  Here is a breakdown:

- The show started with one of the hosts singing a love song dedicated to her recently deceased dog. (And not in an ironic way)
- There was not one but two groups of obscenely obnoxious audience members. Think Kardashian wannabes meets "Dazed and Confused".
- Sets got cut short, one comedian even bailed.

I could go on but I'm not trying to be offensive, I'm just trying to paint a picture.  There were a lot of obstacles to overcome.  I have even more respect for comics now seeing what can happen when the universe seems to be fighting you.

On the upside! We ripped the bandaid right off this thing.  Last night was atypical and we learned from it. Plus, we got some footage, we made new friends, we went to Scottish Hooter's (I'm gonna let TJ tell you all about that one in her next post, she will do it more justice than I can).  I truly believe that things are only gonna get better from here.  I think TJ could use a little more convincing so send her good vibrations today.

So what's next?  Our next shoot day will be later this week when TJ and I film a short video for our KICKSTARTER page.  If you haven't heard of Kickstarter, it is a fund raising website for creative projects.  Think of it as a virtual bake sale, but instead of pastries you get other cool shit for your donation (and maybe some pastries).  This should be up within the week so keep checking back!  I think I am more stressed out about being in front of the camera for this short video than I am about any other part of this process.  So wish me lots of luck!!

The highs and lows of the production phase

Hey blog readers. Thanks for your support. Here's where we are with everything. Enjoy this manic post.

Well, tonight was the night. This is TJ by the way. Had my "big" show at The Palms in WeHo, and it pretty much sucked. The highlight of my day was that B Naj and Scott came all the way up from San Diego.  Let me just say that it was super fun getting to hang out with them for the day. As I write this post, they are headed back to San Diego with millions of amazing stories to tell.

I so desperately wanted this after show post to be upbeat and inspirational, but I guess we can't always get what we want.  Late starting show + hostile aggressive crowd + my own high expectations for a great set = EPIC FAIL. I was funny. I'm always funny, but doing comedy is about a lot more than just being funny. I won't bore you with the theories of humor, I'll just say it can be brutal at times.

So we have officially begun the "production" phase of the documentary. All I can say is that if I were making this film with anyone other than B Naj, tonight would be the end of the road for me. So far, I am not a fan of this phase. Starting out with a sucky show was my biggest fear, and now it has come true. It's all good though. I will press on, and when it's all said and done--we will have a great film. I know that for sure.

I don't have much else to talk about tonight.......I just want to recover from a day of highs and lows. I teach in the morning.

Tomorrow We Cut the Red Tape!

After my post yesterday, I heard through the grapevine that there was a chance that an iconic bassist (and member of one of my favorite bands) may or may not be reading this blog.  My response was simply “holy shit”, then I picked up the phone and call my girlfriend, Jess.  I’m not naming any names, but I think they know who they are… and just for the record this made my whole week. 

As some avid readers (don’t laugh..we’ve got 400 views already!) may have noticed, today is TJ’s day to write, but I am filling in.  TJ is brilliantly entertaining and fabulously inappropriate on and off the stage… that is an exhausting task! Between multiple shows a week, teaching, and being the subject of a documentary, it’s amazing she has anytime at all.  Not to mention that she maintains a social life (5300 text messages a month and a couple hundred emails a day…hellooo!) and being half of what I consider an amazing couple.  Big, BIG shout out to Myriam, you are an incredibly patient person, not to mention endlessly supportive.  Anyway, I think TJ totally deserves the day off. 

This is your last reminder to come TJs show tomorrow and be a part of our first day of production!  It’s going to be epic!

One Foot In Front of the Other

I'm gonna keep this one short and sweet today.

As you all know by now, we will be filming at TJ's show THIS Friday, 3/30 at the The Palms Bar in West Hollywood.  IF you will be in attendance and are interested in answering a few short questions ON CAMERA, please shoot us an email today or tomorrow at tinysuperstars@gmail.com.  Please include your name, relation to TJ (friend, fan, student, family) and a recent picture if possible (just for ease of finding you the night of the show).  

Okay, enough with the bureaucratic crap. I mentioned in my last post that I went to a concert Saturday.  I saw fun. in Pomona (they sing the song "We Are Young").  This was my third time seeing them as fun. and they put one of the BEST live shows I have ever seen.  Their newest album is like a collection of anthems for life.  If I could choose any band to write the soundtrack for our movie, it would be them.

The next 48 hours is going to be get hectic.  Lots to take care of before Friday, mainly crap so we don't get sued.  Who knew the creative process had so many legal documents?

Seriously, what in the hell am I doing?

Shout out to all the readers. Thanks for believing in us.

As exciting as this project is, there are also days like this. Days where I question whether or not I can proceed. Of course I will proceed; sometimes it's just a bit overwhelming. Filming starts Friday and I'm hoping that by Saturday, I will feel a whole lot better about this. B Naj is brilliant, and is being ever so patient with my eccentricities. I seriously have no idea how she puts up with me on a regular basis.

All in all, things are good. Our Kickstarter/fundraising page will be up in one week. By then you will also have seen a clip of my comedy and a more recent picture of Bridget. She's easy on the eyes, and she will be fully annoyed that I wrote that.

Saddleback Adventures

I wanna start with a shout out to TJs 1:30 class at Saddleback! Ya'll know whats up.

Today my mom and I drove up to Mission Viejo to have lunch with TJ and sit in on the class. Today's question of the day was "What makes you unique?". I saw a few students struggle with this question, as did I. It really makes you look at yourself from someone else's perspective. They are such a diverse and interesting group of people and I am really excited for them to be involved in the documentary.

Does anyone else find it weird when people write their Facebook status in the third person? Cause Bridget does.

I mentioned in my last post that we start filming this week. This Friday we will be shooting at TJ's show at The Palms in West Hollywood (8572 Santa Monica Blvd). Show starts at 8:30. This is one of your few chances to be in the film, don't miss out!

I'm still recuperating from this weekend. Saturday was a trifecta of awesomeness. I hit a concert in Pomona, a dance club in San Diego and a house party after that. Sleeping for less than 2 hours has lasting effects, so I'm gonna go crawl into bed and mindlessly watch re-runs of "Scrubs" with my bestie, Sarah.

Frankly, I liked the foreplay phase. It's what's next that scares me.

All is well with the film. Like Bridget said in the last post, we are nearing the "production" phase as opposed to the "pre-production/foreplay" phase. Cameras will begin rolling at my show on Friday, March 30th and I couldn't be more nervous. Frankly, I liked the foreplay stage. It's what's next that scares me. The Foreplay of Movie Making

Things that concern me in the movie industry:

- Titanic being rereleased in 3d

- The Hangover Part 3

- The fact that I will probably see both of these films.

The good news is that in just 6 days, production on the documentary begins! I think TJ will be excited to be out of the pre-production phases, as will I. It's the foreplay of movie making.. you could make a movie without it, it's just a whole lot harder to get good results.

Let me fill you all in.......hip hopsters making a film.

Hi. I'm TJ and I am the subject of the documentary. Getting to work with Bridget Najour is pretty much one of the coolest things I have ever done. For those of you who have no idea what is going on, let me fill you in.

Here is the "skinny" in 100 words or less:

 

I am a fabulously inappropriate humorist who believes that we must all follow our dreams. Since age 4, I have wanted to be a performer, and at age 40, I still do. Basically, I've decided to leave my career as a college professor to do comedy. This is a big risk, and it's pretty scary. In the next 5 months I will be finishing my last semester of teaching and beginning my journey as a full time comic. I might fail, but at least we'll get a movie out of it. 

Bridget is a clever gifted young film maker who for some reason finds me interesting. She plans on chronicling this excursion and then turning into a brilliant work of art that will be seen and adored by millions. Well, you know what I mean. Bridget is making the film. 

Please follow our blog to find out about shows, updates, opportunities to be involved, and life lessons. We will post often and we will have stories, pics and clips....hell, we might even through in a poem or two.

I am a little bit hip hop and Bridget is a little bit indie rock. Together, we are two tiny superstars. Bridget will post tomorrow.......

The Maiden Voyage

I have always thought of a blog as a diary, I love reading someone else's but I would never have one myself. I'm expanding my horizons.

If you have stumbled upon here and you don't know me, I'm Bridget. I'm 24. I bartend to pay the rent and I am going to be a famous film maker someday. But first things first..

I didn't make any resolutions this New Years, instead I made a list of things I wanted to have done by December 31, 2012 (insert end of the world jokes here). Here is a sampling:

- Get a tattoo

- Learn to drive a stick

- Run a 5k

- Make a movie.

So far I'm on track, tattoo is scheduled for June, 5k is in October, and thanks to my friend TJ Huberg (http://ghettopolitan.blogspot.com), I am now making my first movie, a documentary! We start shooting at the end of this month. TJ is a fabulous teacher, comedian and person. Plus she's ridiculously entertaining! I'm also super stoked to be working with Scott Fecteau, who is an awesome cinematographer.

TJ and I will both be posting on here, our blog has multiple personalities...get it? Keep checking back, we are going to have lots of details rolling out soon!

So anyway, this was my first blog post, hope you enjoyed it.
